Toulouse has become the first city in Europe to introduce cryptocurrency payments for public transport. The initiative, launched by Tisséo, the public transit operator, allows passengers to purchase tickets using various cryptocurrencies through an online payment platform.
The service enables travellers to buy single tickets and multi-ride passes with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other supported digital currencies. Payments are processed through a third-party provider, which immediately converts the cryptocurrency into euros, ensuring that Tisséo receives the exact fare amount without exposure to market volatility.
Toulouse’s decision to accept cryptocurrency payments is part of a broader digital transformation strategy aimed at modernising the city’s transport system. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to explore blockchain-based solutions for public services, though no other European city has yet implemented a similar system for transit payments.
Sacha Briand, Head of Finance at Tisséo, commented on the development, telling Le Parisien that the initiative is “a new step towards innovative mobility and easier access to transport for users.”
While the initiative is expected to appeal to tech-savvy commuters, there are ongoing discussions about the broader adoption of cryptocurrency for everyday transactions. However, since the digital payments are instantly converted into euros, Tisséo has stated that it faces no financial risk from crypto market fluctuations.
The initiative aligns with the growing acceptance of digital assets across France. A 2024 Gemini study found that nearly one in five French residents held cryptocurrency.
“That figure may rise to 30 percent in the next two to three years, so to stay ahead and modernise, we are introducing this payment method,” Briand said. “Like the rechargeable ticket we are launching in the coming days, this is another step to diversify our payment options.”
