The City of Oulu is modernising its data communications network in a move that supports both growing digital service demands and the development of future AI and 6G technologies.
Telecommunications provider DNA will deliver approximately 300 corporate network connections across the Finnish city, together with data centre and internet connectivity, under the agreement. The network is designed to provide scalable capacity to support future service development and changing operational requirements.
While the contract focuses on network infrastructure, it also reflects Oulu’s wider ambitions around next-generation connectivity through its involvement in the 6G Rocket project led by the University of Oulu.
The initiative is developing AI-enabled radio networks (AI-RAN) and testing future 6G technologies in collaboration with industry and research partners.
“Reliable and flexible data communications connections are a key part of the city’s service production,” said Tapio Matinmikko, CIO, City of Oulu. “Through the tendering process, the City of Oulu obtained cost-efficient data communications services that enable the development of future services,”
The new network will support municipal operations and also includes dedicated gaming connections operating separately from the city’s corporate network and the ability to increase capacity during major events.
DNA said it will continue investing in fibre infrastructure in Northern Finland as part of the project.
The agreement comes as cities increasingly seek connectivity infrastructure that can support growing digital service demands while providing a platform for emerging technologies.
