Waymo is introducing a transit credit pilot programme to support public transport in Los Angeles and expand access to zero-emission ride-hailing. Announced on Transit Equity Day, the initiative aims to encourage multimodal travel.

The two-month programme, running until 1 April, provides a US$3 credit to riders who connect to any of eight eligible transit stations in Los Angeles. The credit is applied to the rider’s Waymo account the following day and can be used within 60 days.

This follows a similar programme in San Francisco and is intended to facilitate travel to and from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), with participating transit stops frequently used by airport passengers.

“By helping to bridge the gap to other clean forms of transportation and expanding electric vehicle access, we’re hoping to play a crucial part in making sustainable transportation more convenient and affordable,” a Waymo spokesperson said.

By integrating with transit systems, Waymo aims to provide a first/last mile option that could encourage more frequent use of public transit.

Waymo says it will gain learnings from the programme about how people use the service as a first/last mile option to help inform future transit integrations that aim to make regular public transit use more accessible.

“With more than 150,000 paid rides served each week, we’re now preventing over 220 tons of carbon emissions weekly, while helping the cities we operate in reach their climate goals,” said the company spokesperson. “Reducing transportation emissions is essential in improving local air quality and decreasing carbon outputs, and Waymo’s shared mobility model – one that empowers people to elect for cleaner modes of mobility, like walking, biking, public transit, and all-electric autonomous ride hailing – is a tangible way in which communities can work together to build greener communities.”
