From cargo bikes to hyperloop: Multimodal transport is the key

28 July 2021

More and more people will be moving to cities in future. The results of this urbanisation: more cars, congested roads and high levels of fine particulate pollution. Innovative mobility and logistics concepts are needed to ensure that urban spaces remain attractive places to live. The form that these concepts might take will be one of the topics at Hypermotion Frankfurt from 14 to 16 September 2021.

Anyone who wants to effect change in our globally networked world must think systemically and forge partnerships – and this is also true for mobility and logistics. To achieve sustainable and pioneering mobility and logistics solutions in cities, both aspects must be considered simultaneously. Because without mobility there can be no logistics – and no logistics without mobility.

That is why micromobility is becoming increasingly important in metropolitan areas. For the first and last miles in particular, small (primarily electric) vehicles such as cargo bikes, electric motor scooters and e-scooters are seeing increasing use. Cargo bikes can already be used for 50 percent of all commercial transport. Micromobility is also important when it comes to private transport for individuals. More and more people are switching to small vehicles to get from A to B quickly and easily without having to worry about finding a parking space.

Traffic and transport will also be moving elsewhere: in addition to roads, travel will increasingly be moving to the air and water or going underground. In the city of the future, ferries, cable cars, overhead railways, air taxis, water taxis and hyperloops will also be taking people where they want to go. Deliveries will be made by drones and cargo bikes, with urban micro-hubs – small logistics units at local and district levels – growing increasingly important as the places responsible for package deliveries over the last mile. The result: less stress on traffic and transport networks within cities.

The Hypermotion Frankfurt innovation platform

These and other urban concepts and approaches will be showcased at Hypermotion Frankfurt from 14 to 16 September 2021 – both in person on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds and digitally online.

As a multimodal innovation platform, the event brings every mode of transport together to collaborate in finding new business models for traffic, transport, infrastructure, mobility and logistics.

The concept features a conventional exhibition that shares many characteristics with a conference. The trade fair is supplemented by tech talks, panel discussions and start-up pitches. The event is aimed not only at major companies and policymakers, but also at SMEs, entrepreneurs and investors.

In the Hypermotion Lab, panel discussions at the interface between mobility and logistics call for thinking outside the box. Three of the topics on the agenda are ‘The future of cities – rethinking urban spaces’, ‘Analogue mobility vs. digital mobility’ and ‘Goodbye data chaos – data thinking is the future’.

Plans are also underway for three conferences featuring an outstanding roster of speakers. The smc – Smart Mobility + Green Cities Conference serves as a future forum for multimodal concepts and sustainable mobility in networked cities and regions. At the scalex – Supply Chain + Logistics Excellence Conference, the focus is on the topics of resilience, innovation and performance.

On 16 September 2021, the Hyperloop Conference will take place for the very first time. This conference brings international players in the hyperloop ecosystem together to discuss the latest developments in this revolutionary technology.
