The City of Calgary has created Canada’s first downtown 5G test environment that will enable researchers, developers and companies to develop, refine and test new applications and technologies that leverage the benefits of 5G networks.

The 5G Discovery Zone has been developed in collaboration with Rogers Communications, Platform Calgary and Calgary Economic Development.

“When the City of Calgary first started pursuing the idea of collaborating with Wireless Service Providers back in 2019, the goal wasn’t to be the first 5G downtown test environment,” Erin Chrusch, Leader of the Business & Local Economy Team, City of Calgary, told Cities Today. “But the city’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting local businesses, along with its ambition to solve urban challenges through technology, naturally led to it becoming a leader in 5G testing in Canada.”

The zone will focus on innovation and solutions, from small and medium-sized companies and start-ups, to municipal challenges in transit, public safety, and environmental sustainability, and to bolster the local economy.

The zone will include three programmes:

  • Connect & Test: proposed experiments will be accepted and a Rogers Communications-led panel will select concepts and equip the participants with tools for testing.
  • Connect & Test Plus: mentoring and engineering support will be provided from Rogers and its partners.
  • Themed Challenges: ideas for 5G application ideas that address specific challenges in transport and mobility, public safety, and climate and the environment. Winning ideas will receive funding to develop their Proof of Concept within the 5G Discovery Zone.

A spokesperson from the city said the themed challenges could provide solutions that pave the way for a future where smart intersections optimise traffic flow, real-time data empowers first responders to act swiftly and more efficiently during emergencies, and environmental monitoring to promote sustainability.

“This collaboration between the private and public sectors is a clear demonstration of the city’s dedication to collaborative leadership, innovation, and supporting the local business community,” said the spokesperson. “Ultimately, it will help create a more resilient city that holds lasting benefits for all Calgarians.”

Applications for the Connect & Test phase are open until 31 August.
