A partnership between the City of Altamonte Springs and one.network will better inform the public of work being done in right of ways and connect real-time information to vehicles and drivers.

The partnership includes implementing the Live Link and Network Monitor features for the Floridian city’s roadways, which provide real-time updates on construction and traffic conditions.

Because of the company’s partnerships with GPS providers, traffic can be kept away from work zones, incidents, weather events and hazards by alerting drivers about disruptions in advance and as they happen.

Yet the complete information provided through the one.network and what’s sent to navigation providers –such as Waze and Google Maps – differs.

“[one.network] provides authoritative closure information directly from the teams on-site executing the work, when they’re executing the work, ensuring data accuracy and relevance to drivers,” Frank Martz, City Manager, Altamonte Springs, told Cities Today (photo above). “Second, the one.network map shows additional details about road disruptions not typically available from navigation providers, including when disruptions are expected to end.”

The three-year innovation partnership includes two proof of concept phases relating to local government deployment. After, the city will produce a use case for deployment and lessons learned, which will be shared with other local governments to aid in their on-boarding and deployment.

“These systems become truly powerful with many adjacent governments sharing real-time information,” said Martz. “Drivers don’t care where one jurisdiction ends and another begins.”

And in the future, the architecture will also enable the dissemination of real-time information to connected vehicles and IoT devices, proving beneficial for autonomous vehicle navigation.

“The provision of accurate, timely data significantly enhances opportunities within AV, CV, and ITS realms,” said Martz. “The paramount factor lies in the ease of use. Simplified deployment of solutions by governments increases the likelihood of widespread adoption of new ideas and technologies.”
