Albuquerque launches free on-demand transit

The City of Albuquerque, New Mexico is launching a one-year on-demand shared-transit pilot in three zones currently underserved by public transport.

ABQ Ride Connect aims to connect passengers to key transfer route locations and other amenities like grocery stores and medical facilities.

The service will be free, operating weekdays from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm.

“We are excited to launch this innovative approach to provide accessible public transportation, especially in areas that are currently underserved by fixed route service,” said ABQ Ride Director Leslie Keener.

“ABQ Ride Connect will fill the first and last mile gap and give riders the ability to reach more destinations in Albuquerque.”

How it works

Passengers can book the six-seater wheelchair-accessible vans through the ABQ Ride Connect app.

The service will operate within three zones, which have been identified by the city as currently underserved by public transit.

The city says that while the need for transportation services exists within these zones, the demand for frequent fixed route service does not, making them ideal for microtransit.

“Having this new service enhances our larger transit system by filling critical gaps, allowing folks to make small but important on-demand trips like getting to the grocery store, doctor appointments, or visiting local family,” said Albuquerque mayor Tim Keller.

“By looking more closely at the needs of neighbourhoods that may be off the main corridors, we’re improving access for families across the city.”

The vans can also be driven without a commercial licence, which will make the roles more accessible amid a bus driver shortage in the US.

Passengers can submit feedback on each trip through the app, which will then be evaluated by ABQ RIDE at the end of the year-long pilot before a decision is made on whether to expand the programme.
