
Guangzhou launches publication on urban innovation

The city of Guangzhou, China, has launched the publication Deserving and Outstanding Initiatives of the 2012 Guangzhou International Award, following the success of the first edition of the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation, a result of a joint initiative with Metropolis (World Association of Major Metropolises), UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments) and the city of Guangzhou.
The publication, launched by the Office of the Organizing Committee of the Guangzhou Awards, has compiled advanced concepts and successful best practices, enabling world cities to share experiences, draw upon the lessons learned, and work together to secure continued positive results. The publication covers eight areas, including urban planning, administrative management, ecological environment, smart cities, housing & transport, social services, cooperation & citizen involvement and capacity building.
Presented every two years, the awards aim to reward innovations to improve the socio-economic environments in cities and regions, promote sustainability, and advance the livelihood of their citizens, the award will encourage and recognise outstanding innovative projects and practices in the public sector.
The awards received an enthusiastic response from the international community, with the Organizing Committee receiving applications for 255 initiatives from 153 cities (including 29 national capitals) in 56 countries and regions.
