Today the Financial Times (FT) and Citi announced the panel of judges participating in the 2013 FT/Citi Ingenuity Awards: Urban Ideas in Action programme. The judges will select the most innovative solutions for urban progress in the fields of city administration, transport, energy and utilities, education and resource management, housing, health, social services and mobile technologies.

Submissions for the awards are now closed and these will be first reviewed by the FT and business school INSEAD based on a range of criteria, including originality, impact, efficiency and outcomes.

“We hope that there will be an array of ingenious projects that are scalable and replicable–offering the greatest potential to benefit as many cities, and as many people, as possible,” said Liz Fogarty, Director, Strategic Communications, Citi. This year’s judging panel includes; Professor Abhijit Banerjee, Economist; John Bowis, OBE, Honorary President, Health First Europe; Sir Terry Farrell, CBE, International Architect & Design Champion and Director, Terry Farrell and Partners; Edwin Heathcote, Architecture and Design Critic, Financial Times; last year’s winner Janice Muthai, Foundation Manager, Community Cooker Foundation; Bruno Lanvin, Executive Director, European Competitiveness Initiative, INSEAD (co-chair); Professor Carlo Ratti, Italian Architect and Engineer; Professor Anne-Marie Slaughter, President, New America Foundation; and Luanne Zurlo, Founder and President, Worldfund. “The judges are looking for those ideas which have the greatest impact and the most innovative approaches,” the FT’s Edwin Heathcote told Cities Today. “They are also looking for those innovations which are the most appropriate and the easiest to roll out across cities elsewhere in the world.  The idea is that the most ingenious solutions should be able to inspire other cities facing similar challenges to address their own issues effectively and ingeniously.” A shortlist will be announced by the judges in mid-September followed by regional cocktail receptions in Singapore, London, Panama City and San Francisco, featuring keynote addresses and discussion panels with representatives from each region. The regional and global winners will then be announced at an awards dinner in New York in December 2013.
