Why did you become mayor?
I became mayor because I wanted to offer a constructive alternative, and because we made a responsible opposition that proposed ideas to benefit people and increase their welfare.
What is your favourite part of the job?
When you realise that some initiatives you have adopted are helping people, especially those who are suffering the most, and that you are putting forward proposals to develop their potential and to give them growth opportunities.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced since becoming mayor?
The deep economic crisis. But I am confident that Barcelona has all the assets and potential to spur economic growth and generate jobs.
What do you think have been your biggest achievements?
I am extremely proud of having been able to achieve a zero-deficit situation, while increasing the budget devoted to social care. Taking care of the people, especially those who are suffering the most, is one of my top priorities.
What was your last overseas trip as mayor?
I travelled to China last summer. I visited several cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
Who is the most interesting person you have met or worked with since becoming mayor?
I cannot single out just one person, for there have been many people who have made decisive contributions to Barcelona. I am extremely grateful to the talented team I have assembled, and to all the City Council staff who are deeply committed to serving the people of Barcelona.
What do you think of social networking for mayors?
It is critical for mayors to be connected with citizens, to listen to them and to work hard to propose solutions to their problems. New technologies and social media allow us nowadays to engage in these conversations, so I value them very much.
Which other cities do you collaborate with? Is contact formal or informal?
We have subscribed to 23 twinning agreements with cities from all over the world, and we actively participate in international and regional networks and associations of cities. Our bilateral institutional and economic relations are also very strong.
Where do you expect to be in five years’ time?
I hope to continue serving Barcelona’s people.
Favourite place in your city and why?
Without a doubt, Sant Felip Neri Square in the middle of the Gothic Quarter. It is truly enticing, with a charming and elegant beauty, and lots of history.
What are you reading right now?
I am reading once again a book by writer and Barcelona Deputy Mayor, Antoni Vives. The book narrates the story of several characters after the Spanish civil war. It is a vivid and absorbing novel that I like very much.
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
A night owl, though I get up early.
Hobbies and interests outside of work?
I love cycling around Barcelona. I am also a sports fan, and I play golf. But, above all, I love being with my family, especially spending time with my grandchildren.
Do you have a favourite sport team?
Of course: FC Barcelona.
Favourite travel destination?
Menorca.
Who is your hero or inspiration?
I’ve been privileged enough to have inspiring mentors throughout my career. Josep Laporte and Jordi Pujol have both had a profound impact on me.
What advice would you give to the first time visitor to your city?
To stroll along the Passeig de Gràcia. It is surely one of the most beautiful avenues in the world.
What is your life philosophy?
You must love what you are doing; you must enjoy your job, and always try to help others, especially those who suffer the most.
