The first multi-stakeholder platform for 100 percent renewable energy (RE) has formally become a legal entity.

The Global 100% RE platform will help equip local governments with policy guidance and tools to successfully transition to 100 percent renewable energy and measure their performance.

The platform brings together local government global networks, including ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, industry associations such as the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), research institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, foundations like World Future Council (WFC) and non-governmental organisations, including the Sierra Club and Climate Action Network (CAN).

“ICLEI is committed to promoting systemic, city-wide application of standards, policies, regulations and planning practices that enable and accelerate the transition to 100 percent renewable energy,” said Monika Zimmermann, ICLEI Deputy Secretary General.

Its first release is 100 percent renewable energy building blocks, methodological guidance that supports local governments in shaping strategies for a 100 percent renewable energy transition.

“This is a pivotal moment for accelerating the campaign’s outreach and operability, as well as demonstrating our commitment to making Global 100% RE a reality,” said Arthur Hinsch, Global 100% RE Campaign Coordinator.

ICLEI facilitates the Global 100% Renewable Energy Cities & Regions Network. The network has contributed to the Global 100% RE Campaign and will bring a local and subnational government perspective to the newly founded platform. At present, the ICLEI Global 100% Renewable Energy Cities & Regions Network includes leading local and subnational government, such as Vancouver, Vaxjö, Aspen and the Australian Capital Territory.

The following organisations are founding members:

Bundesverband Erneuerbare Energie (BEE)

Climate Action Network (CAN)

Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE)

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability

Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies (ISEP)

International Hydropower Association (IHA)

International Solar Energy Society (ISES)

Japan Community Power Association (JCPA)

Mali-Folkecenter (MFC)

Sierra Club

World Bioenergy Association

World Future Council (WFC)

World Wind Energy Association (WWEA)
