Telecoms company, Nokia, will advance private 5G transformations in cities and airports, with a “go-to-market partnership” with NTT DATA.

The collaboration lays the foundation for the delivery of private 5G networks that supports digital transformation initiatives.

A private 5G network is a local cellular network that provides dedicated and exclusive wireless connectivity for a particular organisation such as a city or airport.

Both companies have already worked together at Köln Bonn Airport, Fraport in Frankfurt, and Brownsville in Texas.

“The network is providing benefits such as faster turnaround time for aircrafts, and perimeter security using computer vision with improved connectivity, improved passenger experience through better network offerings and enhanced security measures through IoT-enabled surveillance systems,” Parm Sandhu (pictured), Vice President Enterprise 5G Products and Services at NTT DATA, told Cities Today.

AI and real-time analytics can be used with private 5G and edge computing by cities and airports to implement solutions like predictive maintenance for smart traffic lights, public safety, crowd management and other mission critical environments.

“Airports require reliable, high-speed connectivity to manage the vast array of assets in motion, enhance safety protocols and improve operational efficiency,” Sandhu explained from MWC Las Vegas. “We’re seeing an unprecedented demand for flexible, high-performance private networks and our solution delivers the necessary bandwidth and low-latency communication to support a range of innovative use cases.”

The company is involved in bringing together an ecosystem of technology partners, – including Celona, Cisco, Schneider Electric, Zebra Technologies, Qualcomm, SES, BMW, and Nokia – to drive digital transformation with a combination of 5G SA core technologies with Nokia Radio Access Network (RAN) and 5G devices and AI solutions.

“Organisations – whether it is a municipal city or an airport – are becoming smarter, more connected and creating more data,” he said. “As a result, these groups need solutions that can deal with the complexity of data growth and analytical capabilities. This strategic partnership combines Nokia’s extensive experience in large-scale RAN with NTT DATA’s expertise in private 5G networks, edge computing, OT [operational technology] security and integrating IT applications.”

The partnership is designed to capture a share of the global private 5G market, which the International Data Corporation (IDC) projects will exceed US$8 billion by 2026.
