Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, Mayor of Warsaw, was elected today as the new president of the European city network, EUROCITIES, during the organisation’s annual conference, held in Nantes, France.

The mayor becomes the second woman president of EUROCITIES and replaces the outgoing president Frank Jensen, Mayor of Copenhagen, who held the post for two years.

Gronkiewicz-Waltz has served as vice president of the network since 2010 in which Warsaw has taken an active role since joining in 2002.

During her one-year renewable presidency, Gronkiewicz-Waltz will focus on EUROCITIES’ current thematic priorities that include economy, climate and inclusion, giving particular attention to growth, jobs and economic recovery.

Gronkiewicz-Waltz became the first female mayor of Warsaw in 2006 and was re-elected in 2010. She had previously served as president of the National Bank of Poland and vice-president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In addition to her political duties, the mayor lectures in law at the University of Warsaw.
