Want to get rewarded for your sustainable habits? There’s an app for that.

14 November 2023

Saving the climate doesn’t just make sense: it can also be fun. With the free Climate Campaigners smartphone app, people can select from dozens of exciting challenges to help them live more sustainably and reduce their carbon footprint, with new challenges constantly being released. The app is available worldwide in 11 languages.

By participating in #CCchallenges, users can track and analyse their own CO2 savings and learn about the other positive impacts of their actions in real time.

There’s a challenge for everyone: the challenge pool covers a diverse range of difficulty levels and action areas, from clever ways to save energy, to tips for easy ways to get from A to B without a car, to opportunities to get involved in their local community.

Users can share their experiences with others, get inspiration, and can invite friends to join along. Through the app’s community feature, users can network, and create, join, and set challenges in groups. Plus, with every challenge completed, users earn points that they can redeem for real rewards. The app’s EU-funded, international team is constantly developing new, dynamic challenges. In the latest update, users can now generate their own challenges directly in the app.

Ten scientific institutes, three civil society organisations, and three consultant enterprises from around the world have joined forces to ground the challenges in behavioural and social science research insights. Joining them are 14 Climate Campaigners Lighthouse Cities across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, united by their will to lead by example and with their communities. The CO2 footprint calculation and recommendations are specifically tailored for individual cities.

Eager to enjoy the benefits of a more climate-friendly lifestyle, and looking for inspiration to get started? Try out some of these most popular #CCchallenges:

  • Active transport only – tomorrow! – High time to get active: Use only active modes of transport tomorrow (i.e. biking, kick scootering, walking, etc.). It will make you happier, fitter, and healthier – and help the environment too. Just remember to pay attention to other people in traffic and to observe traffic rules.
  • Add an additional day without any meat during the next 2 weeks – How many days do you eat meat in a normal week? Try and go one additional day without meat during the next two weeks. Each day without meat means another day of lower carbon emissions and a healthier planet.

Already doing a lot in your daily life for the planet? Try out challenges like these to reach a new level of positive impact and inspire others:

  • Get your old stuff to a good home – Are you getting rid of old stuff? Find friends who want it, or sell it to one of the recycling companies in your town! Can you do this sometime during the next 60 days?
  • Engage in local climate policy – Ask locally elected officials to enhance their climate change policies. Go ahead and be stubborn – that’s how democracy works! Can you do it during the next 60 days? The next generations will thank you!
