Revolutionising our cities

30 November 2018

As the ongoing evolution of our cities continues in conjunction with the increase in urban populations, some city leaders are starting to understand that they need to orchestrate a symphonic ecosystem to accelerate innovation and ultimately improves peoples lives.

These city leaders are conductors that collaborate with utilities, healthcare and transit providers, educational organisations, technology companies, retailers, police and fire, community organisations and citizens to reimagine their future together.

It’s a revolution centered on connectivity, data and a networked based economy that disrupts the boundaries among the traditional industry models that compose the city’s ecosystem. As we speak, stakeholders from many of these industries are working together to solve our community’s toughest issues. New business models are being explored that will revolutionise how we work, get from point A to point B, pay for products and complete everyday tasks. These multidisciplinary teams are taking advantage of cutting-edge information and communications technologies when combined with behavioural changes are overcoming barriers that could not be removed in the past.

The harmonious orchestration of intelligent technologies (machine learning, advanced analytics, blockchain, AI and the Internet of Things) and innovative business models across the city’s ecosystem will revolutionise these cities and drive next generation processes. The key will be to maximise value from the massive volume of data being produced and insights to increase visibility, focus, and agility.

If you are interested in garnering more knowledge about ways to improve outcomes for your citizens or your business by applying a combination of intellectual know how and intelligent technologies, I suggest you read SAP’s Smart city point of view. The paper lays out some interesting scenarios for different industries that can work harmoniously in the city ecosystem and highlights cutting technologies that can revolutionise your city.
