Miovision: Making communities safer, greener, and smarter

12 April 2024

Traffic, mobility, and transport are changing… and at the heart of this shift is a vision for a future free from cables, wires, and bulky hardware. The pulse of progress beats louder and innovation isn’t just a buzzword here – it’s a must.

Welcome to the era of the Digital Intersection where mobility isn’t just safer and faster – it’s greener and more sustainable. Imagine a world where intersections aren’t just points of convergence. They are hubs of digital connection managing the flow of movement. This is Miovision’s picture of the future, going beyond convenience to embrace safety, sustainability, and eco-friendliness as guiding principles.

At the recent City Leadership Forum on Digitalisation in Coral Gables, the air was filled with enthusiasm and determination as the #CLFCoralGables roundtables discussed how cities are using AI for safer streets and efficient transport. Raimundo Rodulfo led discussions with Chair Kimberly W. LaGrue, focusing on unity and progress in two days of roundtables with North American city innovation leaders. Carlo Capua, Fort Worth’s Chief Innovation Officer, stressed the importance of safety and sustainability in future city planning. Despite challenges, there are huge opportunities – and Miovision is at the forefront with traffic solutions that boost safety and efficiency.

Recognised by the US DOT, Miovision is making real changes in cities like Detroit and San Rafael. It’s about action where innovation knows no bounds. With Miovision’s recent acquisition of MicroTraffic, Global Traffic Technologies and Traffic Technology Services (TTS), Miovision has enhanced its capabilities for safer roads, especially in V2X communication. Audi’s Traffic Light Information system now covers over 80,000 intersections in 70 countries. These acquisitions not only boost Miovision’s edge but also showcase its dedication to driving global change. Miovision isn’t just redefining transportation – it’s optimising traffic flow, cutting emissions, and empowering drivers with real-time info.

It’s reimagining the fabric of our cities.

Crossing the divide: Transforming intersections from analogue to digital in the gigabit age

The future of the traffic intersections is shifting from hardware-centric to a more flexible, software-centric model. Intersections currently rely on analogue systems built on standardised hardware. Adding new features like better communication or sensors for safety typically requires new hardware modules. This old method means adding more hardware for each new function, raising costs.

Mobility is moving toward connected and digital technologies to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability.

At Miovision, we identify three tech trends that align with our strategy:

  1. 5G and Edge Computing: 5G promises to transform connectivity, offering fast wireless access and introducing concepts like Edge Computing. Integrating computing capabilities into the network infrastructure (called “Mech” in 5G architecture) allows devices to access compute resources on-demand. This evolution is expected to slash device costs and significantly lower latencies, and could drive a transformation in infrastructure capital costs over the next decade.
  2. AI integration in various industries: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly gaining traction across industries, with applications ranging from signal retiming to transforming cars into “computers on wheels.” One notable application is in connecting vehicles to infrastructure data, such as data from intersections, presenting opportunities for creating income streams for cities through safety applications and consumer services.
  3. Voluntary Carbon Offset Markets: The rise of voluntary carbon offset markets is fuelled by regulatory changes and increased demand for carbon performance reporting by public companies. This trend presents an opportunity for cities to monetise emission reductions by optimising traffic networks, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability while generating new income streams.

Miovision’s recent acquisition of V2X leader Traffic Technology Services (TTS) opens long-term possibilities for making streets safer, cutting energy use, and boosting efficiencies for the freight delivery fleet that will support the city infrastructure economy over the next 10 to 20 years.
