Ericsson rolls out briefcase-sized mobile towers
03 June 2016
In partnership with Vodafone, the Swedish technology company will deploy new mini base-stations across the UK to boost mobile coverage in urban areas.
Called the Ericsson Radio System, the mini base-station radio units aim to give a greater number of customers a more reliable mobile connection. The company reports that the units offer three times the capacity–not only helping meet increasing data demands but making it easier to deploy on rooftops in urban areas–and are more energy efficient.
“We continue to look at new and innovative ways of providing improved mobile coverage in order to meet our customers’ soaring demand for mobile data and video while minimising disruption to the general public and improving the aesthetics of the surrounding area,” said Jorge Fernandez, Chief Technology Officer, Vodafone UK.
Vodafone and Ericsson have installed the first mini base station in Southwark, London, and will be rolling out the new system across the capital and in other urban areas.
A key selling point is that engineers can simply carry the equipment up stairs to a rooftop and install the unit without the need of cranes disturbing city streets below. The new masts are also cheaper and will therefore help speed up the process of extending mobile coverage in city areas with patchy coverage.
“We look forward to further engaging with local councils and government to look at ways of reducing red tape around site planning for mobile mast installations,” added Fernandez.
