Edinburgh Airport is expanding its use of analytics to improve passenger flow management from kerb to flight. This follows a year in which the airport handled a record 15.8 million passengers.
Building on its existing queue management system, which monitors wait times at security and other key areas, the airport will now implement a broader flow management system. This approach provides a detailed view of passenger movements, offering real-time insights to support operational efficiency and the traveller experience.
“With full kerb-to-flight tracking, we will gain valuable insight into passenger trends,” said Alastair Williamson, Head of Airport Systems and Data at Edinburgh Airport. “Understanding these behaviours by flight provides an opportunity to refine all aspects of the passenger experience. As we expand, we can better allocate space and resources to meet demand while enhancing the retail offering.”
By analysing passenger behaviour based on flight schedules and peak travel times, the system enables better resource allocation at critical points. For example, understanding when passengers arrive allows for improved planning of check-in and bag drop staffing, helping to reduce congestion and wait times.
Similarly, insights into passenger dwell times in retail and dining areas will help inform the airport’s commercial strategy, ensuring an appropriate mix of shops and restaurants.
Beyond retail and check-in, the system also supports more effective gate allocation. By studying passenger flow patterns, the airport can adjust walking distances and waiting times, reducing congestion in busy areas. Smarter call-to-gate practices may further improve movement through the terminal.
This initiative is part of a broader digital transformation at Edinburgh Airport, complementing existing operational and resource management systems. These technologies contribute to a more integrated approach to airport management, where passenger flow data helps refine daily operations.
‘’We are delighted to expand on our partnership with Edinburgh Airport to further optimise performance and create better passenger experiences throughout the terminal,” said James Williamson, Veovo CEO. “Linking flight operations with full kerb-to-flight insights is key to transforming operational performance.”
