OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Gov, a version of ChatGPT designed for US government agencies. The platform is intended to support government operations by improving efficiency, assisting with administrative tasks, and enabling agencies to manage AI capabilities within their existing infrastructure.

“At OpenAI, we’re building AI to help people solve hard problems, and we see enormous potential for these tools to support the public sector in tackling complex challenges—from improving public health and infrastructure to strengthening national security,” a company statement said.

ChatGPT Gov can be deployed in government-managed Microsoft Azure commercial and Azure Government cloud environments. This setup allows agencies to address security, privacy, and compliance requirements, including for defence and criminal justice, among others.

Features of ChatGPT Gov

The platform provides access to GPT-4o, OpenAI’s latest model for text interpretation, summarisation, coding, and image analysis. Additional features include:

  • Conversation storage and sharing within agency workspaces.
  • Custom GPTs that employees can develop for specific agency needs.
  • An administrative console for IT teams to manage security, access, and policies.

Current government use cases

Since 2024, over 90,000 government users across 3,500 federal, state, and local agencies have used ChatGPT for various tasks.

Examples include:

  • The Air Force Research Laboratory is using ChatGPT Enterprise for administrative functions, coding support, and AI education.
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory is evaluating ChatGPT for scientific research and bioscience applications.
  • Minnesota’s Enterprise Translations Office has integrated ChatGPT Team into translation services to improve processing times.
  • The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania found that employees using ChatGPT Enterprise were able to complete certain routine tasks more quickly.

Next steps

OpenAI is working toward FedRAMP Moderate and High accreditations for ChatGPT Enterprise and is evaluating an expansion of ChatGPT Gov to classified cloud regions.

By providing this tool to government agencies, OpenAI aims to support AI integration into public sector operations while maintaining compliance with government standards.
