The University of Oxford is offering professionals the opportunity to study part-time to gain an MSc (Master of Science) degree in Sustainable Urban Development. The programme offers a worldview of core areas and advanced topics in sustainable urban futures, linking research to policy and practice.

“The students on the programme are working professionals from all around the world and they want to know how cities work and don’t work and that is the point of the course,” said Dr. David Howard, University of Oxford. “It’s to let professionals who have active experience get involved and see how they want to shape tomorrow’s cities, both in terms of infrastructure but also the daily living environment of individuals, households and at the neighbourhood level.”

The MSc provides a stimulating learning environment and exposure to cutting-edge knowledge, aimed at enhancing professional development and opportunities in a global interdisciplinary context.

Students, lecturers and alumni reflect upon their experiences in a recent series of interviews commissioned by the University, which demonstrates the dynamic learning environment, motivations for joining and the impact of the MSc on career prospects:

A strong and active alumni network is an important part of the MSc experience, where students also learn through networking with their peers. Alumni continue to engage with students and lecturers on a variety of occasions through formal dinners and an annual dissertation workshop to share ideas and professional experiences allowing students to understand, explore, debate and innovate.

“The University of Oxford MSc in Sustainable Urban Development is a two-year part-time programme for those wishing to think forward and act now to shape our urban futures,” said Dr. Howard. “Combining high-level professional skills with continuing study and research, keeping ahead of current practice and anticipating future needs is an essential part of career development.”

Specialists from a multidisciplinary field of urban professions contribute to a series of intensive teaching weeks held in Oxford and London. Leading research from Oxford is brought together with cutting-edge practical and professional expertise, covering critical themes including urbanisation in the Global South, the impacts of climate change on the built environment, and the role of finance in sustainable development.

Students come from a variety of international backgrounds, which forms a vital context for the programme. The course attracts economists, business development managers, property and real estate developers, architects, urban planners and designers, project managers, financiers and lawyers.

Delivered in partnership with the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community and accredited within the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors University Partnership, the MSc helps professionals transform their careers to lead in their respective fields.
