UN-Habitat and the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on ‘Promoting Cycling as a Sustainable Means of Transportation’. Joan Clos, the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, and Manfred Neun, President of the European Cyclists’ Federation signed the agreement.

“We need to merge the efforts of governments and non-governmental organisations from the south and the north for a more sustainable development of cities,” said Neun. “We are happy with the recognition of ECF’s work by UN-Habitat and enthused by Dr Clos’ vision on sustainability and his emphasis on walking, cycling and public transport for sustainable urbanisation.”

This agreement engages both parties to advocate for better recognition within city plans and policies of the importance and benefits of cycling as a mode of transport and will collaborate through sharing expertise to achieve a mutual goal of improving urban mobility patterns worldwide.

UN-Habitat and ECF seek to work in partnership to promote, on a worldwide basis, sustainable mobility and especially cycle mobility in urban areas through better coordination of plans and related policies.

The European Cyclists’ Federation unites cyclist’ associations from across the globe, giving them a voice on the international level. With over 70 members across nearly 40 countries, the aim is to get more people cycling more often by influencing policy in favour of cycling. ECF organises the annual Velo-city Conference Series. This year Velo-city Global 2014 is in Adelaide, Australia, from 27-30 May.
