Iceland launches new cycle route map

Iceland has launched a new cycle route map of the country, with the graphic design providing clarity by mimicking the iconic map of the Tube in London. The map contains all the information about cycling facilities on the island, such as, an overview on cycle routes, bike repair and bicycle rental.

“It is the first time ever that information on all the cycling services in Iceland, such as bike repair and bicycle rental, has been collected in one place,” said a spokesperson from the Icelandic Cyclists’ Federation, the publishers of the new map. “And for the first time, a schematic map presents all public transport in Iceland.”

A total of 30,000 copies of the new map, named ‘Cycling Iceland 2013’, have been printed for free delivery and already distributed to tourist information centres, hotels, hostels and cafes. Is can also be viewed on-line or downloaded. The map crucially also includes contact information for all the companies around Iceland that provide public transport services.

“The buses can all take a limited number of bicycles in the luggage compartments, and sometimes on external racks,” said the spokesperson. “This can come in handy if you are running late catching the boat home or if you are unlucky enough to experience more wind than bargained for, or a spell of a little Eyjafjallajökull ash.”

The Icelandic Cyclists’ Federation was established in 1995 as an umbrella organisation for touring, commuting and sports cyclists in cooperation with a national body for non-competitive sports (Íþróttir fyrir alla), under the Icelandic Sports Association. The official name is Landssamtök hjólreiðamanna (in Icelandic), abbreviated to LHM.
