Eye on Earth Summit to identify how big data can save the planet

15 June 2015

by Richard Forster

Taking place from 6–8 October 2015 in Abu Dhabi, the Eye on Earth Summit will be dedicated to identifying solutions for improving the provision and use of data for sustainable development.

Summit delegates will learn about how big data can save the planet and how it can drive the necessary institutional change governments need to make in order to decouple economic growth from the rate of natural resource consumption. The Summit will also explore the dynamics of data supply and demand, and the enabling conditions required for its collation, access and application.

Eye on Earth (EoE) is a global movement striving to revolutionise the way we collate, share and access environmental, social and economic data to support informed decision-making for sustainable development.

Born out of Principle 10 of the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, EoE’s vision is achieved through the work of eight pioneering programmes of activity known as the Special Initiatives; the EoE Summit and the overarching governing EoE Alliance framework, comprised of the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative, the Group on Earth Observations, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Resources Institute.

The Earth’s natural resources and biodiversity are under tremendous pressure. To sustain the planet, while ensuring that societies and economies are able to reach their fullest potential, governments, corporate leaders, and civil society, must begin making choices that are informed by relevant, timely and accessible data and information.

The work of Eye on Earth has the potential to alter the course of sustainable development for generations to come, but needs the support of governments, the private sector and academic and civil societies.
