EUROCITIES announces partnership with Cities Today

EUROCITIES, the network of major European cities with its headquarters in Brussels, has signed a partnership agreement with Cities Today.

“EUROCITIES is delighted to be partnering with Cities Today as this will enable EUROCITIES to connect with a world audience,” said Nicola Vatthauer, Communications Director at EUROCITIES. “Cities Today is earning a reputation for knowledge-sharing of cities’ experiences worldwide and EUROCITIES is keen to highlight the innovative solutions that European cities are coming up with to tackle the challenges of the twenty-first century.”

EUROCITIES was founded in 1986 by the mayors of six large cities: Barcelona, Birmingham, Frankfurt, Lyon, Milan and Rotterdam. Today it brings together the local governments of over 130 of Europe’s largest cities and 40 partner cities, that between them govern 130 million citizens across 35 countries.

“We are very pleased to be working with EUROCITIES as part of our strategy to bring together the key regional associations to enable local governments to exchange knowledge and experience,” said Richard Forster, Managing Editor at Cities Today. “We now have partners in Asia-Pacific, Africa, Latin America and Europe and continue to work closely with ICLEI and C40 on a global level.”

EUROCITIES plays an important role in shaping the opinions of Brussels stakeholders to shift the focus of EU legislation in a way, which allows city governments to tackle strategic challenges at local level.

In 2012, EUROCITIES held 16 forum meetings, over 80 working group meetings and issued some 30 policy statements, a testament to its commitment to the urban cause in Europe. The current President of EUROCITIES is Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, mayor of Warsaw, which will be the host city for the COP 19 meetings on climate change in November. EUROCITIES’ own annual event will take place in Ghent from 27 to 29 November.
