A new City Connector scheme transforming parking meters into retail hubs has been launched by MasterCard and Parkeon.

The City Connector marks a unique way for consumers to connect with local businesses, shops and restaurants by delivering offers and services via on-street parking meters.

The platform uses existing city infrastructure to enable corporate third parties to publish offers and manage campaigns by turning Parkeon parking meters into connected devices. The SaaS (software as a service) solution is powered by the Enterprise Offers Platform from MasterCard giving drivers and pedestrians the opportunity to scroll through offers and information on parking meters.

Customers can select deals using the kiosks’ interactive screens after which the coupons are printed that can be redeemed at point of sale at local shops. No registration or sign-up process is required.

The concept re-thinks the functions of a parking meter by having them feature split screens. One side displays the usual parking passes but the other side features deals from  local stores and businesses.

The City Connector scheme is being launched in Downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, with 16 interactive kiosks going live showcasing offers from stores and restaurants. MasterCard and Parkeon then aim to roll out the product widely across the US and Europe in the coming months.

Will Judge, Head of Urban Mobility at MasterCard, said: “MasterCard is at the heart of smart city development. We partner with innovative municipalities and companies around the world to realise unfulfilled potential across cities, ultimately transforming the urban experience for citizens and visitors.”

Bertrand Barthelemy, CEO of Parkeon said: “In partnership with MasterCard, we have developed a solution that is truly unique; City Connector has the potential to enhance how people interact in cities and we look forward to bringing this new service to other cities across the globe.”
